Change your injecting
area as injecting into the same area over and over can cause lumps or fatty
build-up in the area, you can avoid this by changing the body paer.
Pick an appropriate body
region and use that area for one to two weeks, but change within that area with
each injection by at least 2 inches away from your previous injection area.
Avoid problem areas, do
not inject on area which is sore, swollen or have a open wound. Inject at least
3-4 inches away from belly button and 2 inches away from any scars.
Also avoid injecting
into muscles that will be used because this will speed up absorption of the
insulin for example don't inject insulin into the upper arm before playing
tennis.
Clean the injection area
with alcohol, use an alcohol swab or a cotton ball to clean the area you are
going to inject, let the alcohol air dry, wash the hands before using your insulin
pen.
Remove the pen cap as intermediate acting insulin usually appears to
have a milky consistency. Rotate the pen between your hands to mix the insulin for
about 20 seconds.
Prepare the needle,
screw the needle tightly onto the insulin pen by rotating it clockwise, pull
off the big outer needle cap and do not throw it away, pull off the inner
needle cap and dispose it, be careful not to bend or damage the needle before
use.
Set the pen to remove air
bubbles, turn the dosing knob to select a dose of three units with the needle pointed
up, push the dosing knob all the way in watch for a drop of insulin to appear at
the tip of the needle, if no insulin appears repeat the process make sure the
dose is set back at zero when this is complete.
Put the dosing selector
dials to the appropriate units as there is no specific numbers of units, consult
the doctor about the diabetes and blood sugar and determine the right number of
units of insulin. it's possible that you will use different amounts and different
times of the day so be sure to always set the dosage to the correct unit.
Don't be nervous, calm
your nerves by doing deep breathing exercises meditating or giving some
positive affirmations before injecting the insulin.
Insert the needle into
the pinched skin at a 90° angle to the body, but insert the needle quickly and
make sure the needle goes all the way into the skin, release the pinched skin, with
the needle still in place. Press the dosage in knob until it shows zero.
Remove used needle, put
the large needle cap carefully on the needle.
Store the pen appropriately,
store insulin pens at a controlled room temperature or in the refrigerator, be
sure to keep the pen in a safe space so that the children and pets cannot
access it.
Do not expose insulin to
very hot or cold weather conditions or direct sunlight.
Throw away expired
insulin, always check expiry dates on the insulin. Number of days pen can be used
depends on each manufacturer, pens last between 7 to 28 days if stored at a
controlled room temperature. Consult the doctor or pharmacist about the specifics
and always follow instructions on the packaging.
